In 2008 and acute lung unit to provide assisted ventilation respiratory support for patient’s with respiratory failure was opened on the respiratory ward at Bournemouth Hospital. It was formally opened by Mrs Fiona Castle (widow of the entertainer Roy Castle). The Bournemouth chest disease charitable trust supported this development with a donation of £225,000 which included specialists equipment (ventilators) increased nursing staff and appointment of a new consultant. The use of non-invasive ventilator is on the respiratory ward has now become standard practice across the country and many 100s of patients have benefited from this service.
The charity has continued to support the Acute Lung unit with further purchase of newer ventilators and equipment.
